2.6+grsec break PCI support [SOLVED]

Postby olewales » Sat Jul 07, 2007 11:02 am

Hello!
My english is not very good so I let me pass staight to the problem.

Running linux 2.6.21.5 with the latest grsecurity patch (or any 2.6 kernel with adequate grsecurity version) breaks PCI support on my system which thus becomes unbootable (disk controller on PCI).
Here is a fragment of boot messages:
Code: Select all
PCI: Fatal: No config space access function found
...
Setting up standard PCI resources
...
PCI: System does not support PCI
PCI: System does not support PCI

I dont paste rest of messages because kernel panic is a direct result of non accessible hdd.

This occurs on pretty old machine (P233, 128MB RAM, mb on Hint Corp VXPro II Chipset) but it is sufficient, flawless and not very power consuming hardware for home server/router. I dont want to change it if i won't have to.

Vanilla 2.6 kernel with exactly the same config and all 2.4 kernels are working fine. I noticed that the patch breaks kernel even when grsecurity and PaX are disabled in config. Just applying patch on kernel cause the problem.

Please, help! I want to switch to 2.6 kernel because this could make few things easier for me and save me some work but i cant run it without gsecurity filesystem restrictions.

can you post your .config and the dmesg (as much as you can capture) please?

On patched kernel i can only see some part of dmesg during bootup, but it not seems to be much diffrent. Kernel panics pretty soon with "not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown block..." message. If it will be really necessary i can try to log full dmesg via serial console but I have never tried it before.

Here is .config file for patched kernel (minimalistic version which I have built for test)...

Yes, i noticed that missing CONFIG_PCI_BIOS line too, i tried to add it manualy and recompile kernel but it failed. It seems that the patch breaks configuration but with my knowledge about C i can code "Hello world" and not much more so i can't fix it myself. I would greatly appreciate if someone could help me.

You selected CONFIG_PCI_GOANY=y so as you can see in

arch/i386/Kconfig

---
config PCI_BIOS
bool
depends on !X86_VISWS && PCI && PCI_GOBIOS
default y
---

CONFIG_PCI_BIOS will not be selected.

Maybe your chipset requires to use PCI_GOBIOS !?

So select PCI_GOBIOS and try again :)

Ok, i've set PCI access mode to bios, compiled kernel once again and this time it WORKED!!! :D I tested it only on my minimal test kernel for now but tonight I am going to compile full, hopefully working kernel. Thank you all VERY much for your help!

(breaking PCI support with access mode set to any is still a bug in grsecurity, but as long as I have workaround for it, i dont care :D)

indeed, but it's spender's doing, PaX itself doesn't disable the BIOS access method in GOANY mode ;-). now with that said, it's weird that your system is unable to boot/work with the DIRECT access method, can you try to enable GODIRECT and post a dmesg (try to capture it via serial or netconsole if needed)?
