Hello:

The following commands will also cause the machine to hang:

>cd /bin
>ls -l

The following commands will NOT cause the machine to hang:

>cd /bin
>ls

My root file system is of type ext4.

Problem solved. I rebuilt the machine using hardened sources, 4.4.2 with (Gentoo)stage3-i686-hardened-20160223.tar.bz2 .

The previous attempts failed with I used hardened sources, 4.4.2 and 4.3.3-r4 with (Gentoo)stage3-i686-hardened-20160216.tar.bz2

It might have been a userland problem in that stage.
