I installed Ubuntu 9.10 Server (into VMware) and did the following:

tar jxf linux-2.6.31.11.tar.bz2
patch -p0 < grsecurity-2.1.14-2.6.31.11-201001071931.patch
cd linux-2.6.31.11
sudo make menuconfig
fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd kernel_image kernel_headers
sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.31.11-grsec_2.6.31.11-grsec-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb
[sudo] password for bleh:

Any ideas?

Are you currently using a grsecurity kernel on the Ubuntu guest?
If the process of installing failed while running a normal kernel I suggest you run the commands manually to try and find the error.

If you already have a running grsecurity kernel also check the output of dmesg for hints.

If it really is a grsecurity problem please follow the guidelines at http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Grsecurity/Reporting_Bugs

No, I am running vanilla 9.10 Ubuntu Server stock kernel.

Thanks, I will try that - however I doubt that it would solve the problem as the error did not happen during the kernel compilation.

Thanks for the advice.

I played with this a bit more and got it working. So, I guess it was just a user error ... I'll get me coat
