Failed to read startup file

Hi,

We've compiled and run grsec kernels before without issue, but attempting to boot into any of the recent test patches results in this error:

"failed to read startup file
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!"

as we see no other mention of this error we've got to assume we're doing something a bit stupid here, can anyone point out the problem?
