`find` and `tar` exits with "Invalid Argument"

Postby psy__ » Mon Jan 22, 2007 3:04 am

Hi,
I have problems with tar and find when grsec is enabled.

If I have a dir with lots of files and with relatively long names, both programs exit with error message "Invalid argument".
This is happening for long time ago I just decided to finally write here.

Here is what I do

with the following script generate 5k files:
--------------------------------------------------------------
#!/bin/bash
mkdir xxx
for i in `seq 1 5000`; do
touch xxx/aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa$i
echo $i
done
--------------------------------------------------------------

then try to do
[root@hermes tmp]# find xxx
xxx
find: xxx: Invalid argument

[root@hermes tmp]# tar cf test.tar xxx/
tar: xxx: Cannot savedir: Invalid argument
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

Here is the strace from both commands

find:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I notice that both command fail on this line:
find-strace.txt:mremap(0x4d4ab000, 135168, 266240, MREMAP_MAYMOVE) = -1 EINVAL (Invalid argument)

tar-strace.txt:mremap(0x4e3e6000, 135168, 266240, MREMAP_MAYMOVE) = -1 EINVAL (Invalid argument)

The other thing I note is that if I recompile the programs from latest source it fixes the problem, but I dont know what other programs are affected too.

I am running:

CentOS 4.4 32 bit with all updates applied
Kernel 2.6.19.2 + grsec but I experience the same behavior on 2.6.17.11 too.

Here is the kernel config:

Re: `find` and `tar` exits with "Invalid Argument"

find-strace.txt:mremap(0x4d4ab000, 135168, 266240, MREMAP_MAYMOVE) = -1 EINVAL (Invalid argument)
this is because you disabled MPROTECT, so all vmas are mirrored (as they can become potentially executable) and mremap is explicitly disallowed on mirrors. but that shouldn't be a problem as glibc recovers (it's a linux specific syscall) and does a mmap/memcpy/munmap cycle instead.
The other thing I note is that if I recompile the programs from latest source it fixes the problem, but I dont know what other programs are affected too.
is there any difference in the strace? also, i tried this here on a gentoo box (quite up-to-date sw) and had no problems, so i think it's some userland issue, but i have no idea what kernel change would trigger it, i'm afraid it's gdb time if you really want to find out...

The strange thing that in the custom compiled programs, in strace the same problem is seen but the program is working just fine (at least it looks like it is working)

mremap(0x4f7ee000, 135168, 266240, MREMAP_MAYMOVE) = -1 EINVAL (Invalid argument)
mmap2(NULL, 266240, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x4f7ad000
munmap(0x4f7ee000, 135168) = 0

The programs which causes problems are compiled from redhat sources. Even the latest source from fedora core 6 is causing the same troubles. It just does not work
The version of tar coming with CentOS is:
tar-1.14-12.RHEL4
the version from fedora which I tried (recompiled the src.rpm) too is:
tar-1.15.1-24
The same and with findutils
they all break and not working like expected.
However if I download the latest vanilla source from the projects homepages,
tar shows "Invalid Argument" error in strace but still working
and find does not show any weird behavior. No strange things in the strace. I guess this is caused by some redhat specific patch or I dont know what.

How can I further track the problem with gdb? What do you want me to do? (If you have time to deal with me of course ;) )

what you can do is look at the tar sources and see where it reads in the directory (getdents) and from then on, you should trace the app line-by-line until you find the deviation between the original vs. recompiled binaries. this is time consuming but i don't see any other obvious way to find the problem...
