jlambrecht, have you used any form of public record media (like mailing lists) for the communication with the maintainer? Linking here would be highly appreciated for the record.
I hope you did so, because there could be a more generic problem, which one single person may fail to see, while a public discussion certainly is seen by more people.

Such was the response for the package maintainer as well. I don't get it, this is not what it used to be like. I've used Debian since Bo, later Woody what the f*** happened.
