Sorta Newbie Question

Postby thx-1138 » Sun May 29, 2005 11:33 pm

Dear All;

I feel studip asking this but can you use the latest release grsecurity-2.1.5-2.6.11.9-200505121617.patch.gz on a Redhat Enterprise AS v.4 x86_64 on this kernel verision 2.6.9.5 since there isn't one for this particular kernel? Or does it have to be the specific kernel revision level?

Logic would indicate no that it must be used with the 2.6.11.9.

correct. not only the kernel version must match (though with this new 2.6.x.y scheme y shouldn't matter most of the time), but it must be a vanilla kernel as well, vendor kernels may contain patches that interfere with grsecurity. another thing to look out for is userland breakage, in particular the PT_GNU_STACK problem (search this forum for more info).

Hi PAx Team;

Sorry to post this here but I'm at a lost as to were else to ask. If one wanted to install a vannila/genric linux are there specific howtos available, if so where. I see lots of information about specific distros but I have't found any on a generic install. Where would one start? I've been doing distro linux for a while and would like to take the next step and do my own. thx-1138 linux Any help would be welcome.

thanks

PS are there distro's that are essentially or come very close to your defination of a generic linux.

not sure what you mean by 'specific distro' vs. 'generic install', but if you want to do everything yourself, there's Hardened Linux From Scratch at http://linuxfromscratch.org/~archaic/hlfs-book/.
